Maneater History

In 1955, Joel Gold and Jim Willard became the Editor-in-Chief and Business Manager of the Missouri Student, a newspaper largely regarded as a PR newsletter for the student government and Greek Life. For the six years that it existed, the Missouri Student was staffed by members of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. The first thing Gold did when taking over was change the paper’s name to The Maneater. The Maneater’s name has since signified a strong and aggressive paper that has been serving as the student voice of MU.

Along with the new name, Gold instituted a new editorial policy: “The Maneater by its very name cannot content itself with merely presenting the news … The Maneater is a tiger with fangs bared and claws sharpened ready to analyze the facts and then to pounce.”   “If you want to keep us out, better bar the door. And don’t try getting rough or screaming ‘libel’ when a Maneater reporter crashes your meetings. When The Maneater gets mad, all hell is going to break loose. You’ve been warned.”

Since Gold’s time, The Maneater has worked hard to maintain rigorous reporting while also being a source of accurate and complete information. As the official student voice of MU, The Maneater covers campus news, sports, arts and entertainment, as well as reporting the latest news in the city of Columbia and the state of Missouri. It is our duty to keep students informed about issues which concern them immediately as students at MU, but also as members of a global community.
