General Information

The Maneater is a tabloid publication produced using offset printing. The Maneater is published twice weekly on Tuesday and Fridays while classes are in session during the fall and winter semesters. Throughout the summer, The Maneater is published twice, one Summer Welcome issue and one Freshman Mailer.

Display Advertising

Local Display

$6.00 per column inch for all Columbia businesses

  • 10% discount is offered for prepayment of ads.
  • 10% discount is offered for ads that are re-run.
  • 20% discount is offered for university departments.
  • 25% discount is offered for university-sponsored student organizations.

Contracts for Local Advertisers

Contracts offer frequent advertisers a discount off the open rate. The maximum allowable discount is 25 percent. The business manager must sign and approve all contracts on a semester basis. Contract advertisers are not eligible for pre-pay discounts.

The following contract rates are available:

  • 5% discount for 160 advertising inches per semester
  • 10% discount for 320 advertising inches per semester
  • 20% discount for 480 advertising inches per semester
  • 25% discount for 640 advertising inches per semester

Corresponding online contract option include:

  • $250 button ad or $350 banner ad per semester
  • $200 button ad or $300 banner ad per semester
  • $150 button ad or $250 banner ad per semester
  • $100 button ad or $200 banner ad per semester

Regional Display

$9.00 per column inch for all business and agencies within a 150-mile radius of Columbia. This includes Kansas City, St. Louis, and Springfield, MO businesses.

$11.00 per column inch for all businesses more than 150 miles outside of Columbia.

Preprinted Inserts

The following rates apply to preprinted inserts:
Single-Sheet Insert: $65 per thousand
2-4 Page Insert: $70 per thousand
5 or more pages: $75 per thousand

The minimum amount of inserts is 5,000 and the maximum number is 9,000. Other discounts do not apply. The Maneater requests a copy of the insert at least two weeks prior to insertion for review by the business manager. Inserts must be delivered to the printer at least one week before the date of insertion.

Classifieds Advertising

The following rates apply to classifieds advertising:
1-4 Issues: 30¢ per word
5-8 Issues: 25¢ per word
MU Students: 20¢ per word with MU I.D.
To boldface any part of the ad: 50¢ extra per ad
Classified Display Ads $8.00 per column inch

  • All classified ads will also appear on the classfieds page of the online version of The Maneater.
  • Minimum of 15 words per ad.
  • All classified ads must be prepaid in full. Check must include a drivers license number.
  • No refunds.
  • The Maneater business manager reserves the right to reject any ad.
  • Classified display ads can be no larger than two columns wide and eight inches tall.
  • All regular contract, prepayment and rerun discounts apply to classified display ads.

In the event a classified ad does not run as scheduled, or contains an error that is clearly the fault of The Maneater, the classifieds manager will correct the content and reschedule the ad to run free of charge.

Online Advertising

Online advertising is available as a supplement or alternative to advertising in the print version of The Maneater. The prices for online advertising are as follows:

Banners & Button Ads

Large Banners (468px x 60px):
$400 per semester
$150 per month
$50 per week

Vertical Banners (140px x 380px):
$300 per semester
$100 per month
$35 per week

Electronic Ad Submission Guidelines

It is critical to understand the electronic ad requirements of The Maneater before sending us your files. Electronic transfers are simple and ensure that the final printed version is of the highest possible quality.

File Formats and Software

PDF (Acrobat) files are preferred if you embed all graphics and font into a single, complete file. We also accept files from any of the following software products:

  • Adobe InDesign
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Microsoft Word

Earlier version of the software listed above are acceptable, but adjustments may be needed due to reflowing of text.

Note: The Maneater uses Macintosh computers. Although we can read most Windows formats, if you have a choice in software, there will be fewer problems if you supply with Mac files.

We do not accept files in Microsoft Powerpoint, Adobe Pagemaker or any Corel software formats. If you create content in these programs, you should convert your file to a PDF.
