Job opportunities at The Maneater
The Maneater is eager to welcome any new staff member, regardless of previous experience or college major. In other words, you don’t have to be a pre-journalism major, nor do you have to have worked for a newspaper before. Your best bet to get involved — come by our news meetings every Tuesday and Friday at 4:30 p.m. — check house ads in the print version of the Maneater for location.
Staff Writers
All writers start as reporters. A reporter can become a staff writer by completing five story assignments. Staff writers are then paid $10 per story. After a semester as a staff writer, pay increases to $12 per story. When staff writer has worked with The Maneater for a year, he or she is then considered a senior staff writer.
For each issue, one story is appointed Story of the Issue. This designation is awarded with an extra $5.
Photographers
A photographer becomes a staff photographer by completing five photo assignments. A staff photographer is paid $10 per photo. After a semester as a staff photographer, pay is increased to $12 per photo. After one year of working for The Maneater, a staff photographer becomes a senior staff photographer. All photographers must have their own cameras.
Like Story of the Issue, one photo per issue is selected as Photo of the Issue. The bonus for Photo of the Issue is also $5.
Production Staff
The production staff works in the evening on production nights (Mondays and Thursdays) to arrange the stories and photos on the pages to be printed. Our newspaper uses Adobe InDesign for designing. Members of the production staff are paid $12 per shift and an additional $2 per page as soon as they begin work.
A Design of the Issue is picked for every issue and, like Story and Photo of the Issue, is rewarded with a bonus $5.
Online Production Staff
Members of the online staff work early in the morning on days when the paper is published (Tuesdays and Fridays) translating stories from the InDesign layouts into the online database that makes up The Maneater’s Web site. Online staff members get paid $10 per shift as soon as they begin working for The Maneater.
Columnists
Anyone wishing to be a columnist can apply at the end of a semester. Watch for posters and house ads annoucing that applications are available. The editorial board then chooses the next semester’s columnists from the submitted applications. Each columnist appears once a week, and is therefore responsible for turning in one column per week. Columnists are paid $8 per column. If a column is chosen for a second semester (after re-applying), then the pay increases to $10 per column.
Cartoonists
Like columnists, anyone can apply for a cartoon at the end of a semester. Cartoons are selected by the editorial staff. They run twice a week; each cartoonist must submit two cartoons per week. Cartoonists are paid $8 per cartoon.
