MOVE Mix - 6/21

The Ultimate Playlist to Finding Summer Love

The glorious three months of freedom all students possess in the summer bears a number of gifts, among them is summer love. I don’t know what it is about the warm breezes and glaring sun, but summer brings people together. So, if you are tired of listening to Jason Mraz and ringtone rap as you try to make a move on your summer lust, here are 10 songs that will get you a goodnight kiss.

  1. “Girl I Wanna Lay You Down” by Animal Liberation Orchestra [feat. Jack Johnson] -- This laid back, island jam is reminiscent of many Jack Johnson songs and the softly sung lyrics about love handles and rasta music will melt your honey’s heart.

Here’s the song, performed live by Jack Johnson.

  2. “Brandy Alexander” by Ron Sexsmith -– The combination of horns and piano creates a sultry and danceable tune (slow dance, that is) as Sexsmith soulfully howls about a no-good lover that he can’t get enough of. You might recognize this song. Leslie Feist of Broken Social Scene fame has performed it as well. Here’s Sexsmith, performing it live with his band.

  3. “Hang On” by Dr. Dog -– This song’s powerfully persuasive lyrics might be enough to score you a date with a hottie at the bar, but even if you end up going home alone, “Hang On” will cheer you up with its thumping piano and background choir.

  4. “Wishbone” by Architecture in Helsinki -– These Australian natives have created an innocent pop ballad with “Wishbone.” The wide array of instruments, from violins to tambourines, creates a deep and immersive sound and is infectiously positive.

  5. “All I Want” by Violent Femmes -– Alternative rock legends Violent Femmes show their sensitive side on this track about longing for a long distance lover. Complete with rollicking bass lines and a gentle acoustic guitar, your sweetheart will love to hear this over your next Skype call.

  6. “Tracey’s Buns” by Dr. Manhattan –- Containing only one instrument, an acoustic guitar, “Tracey’s Buns” might have you scratching your head, but your honey will blush to the off color lyrics: “Milkshakes are pretty fucking tasty, but I love you more because you’re Tracey.”

  7. “Angelina” by Louis Prima -– Italian love boat Louis Prima sings this song about an Italian heartthrob and her divine dishes of pasta. The lounge atmosphere is courtesy of the ‘40s and ‘50s when swing was king and artists like Prima, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were stealing hearts like Lil Wayne is doing today. Voice modifiers optional.

  8. “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” by Ida Maria -– As the title indicates, this song is about sex and lust. There is no beating around the bush about it. Maria is a rising pop queen, in line with Lily Allen and Katy Perry with her lyrics, except Maria is actually provocative.

  9. “San Dimas High School Football Rules” by the Ataris –- This underdog anthem about getting the girl utilizes blitzkrieg power chords and speedy lyrics to make for a perfect scene-kid song.

  10. “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver -– This playlist concludes with a heart-wrenching break up song. Justin Vernon utilizes imagery and symbolism in the lyrics to communicate his heartache. If this song doesn’t get the waterworks flowing at the end of the summer, nothing will.
