‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ — 4 out of 5 stars

The “Need for Speed” series has switched from the race track to the streets in its latest game, “Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.” Players can now control both racers and police, and the vast array of cars and races are bound to keep players hooked.

The game map is a fairly large area. There is an option for the player to drive freely around the map, but for the most part, events are chosen through the map diagram displayed in the main menu. Players can switch between playing the role of racer and cop at anytime, and each side provides a unique experience.

The race types are the same as in previous “Need for Speed” games, but a new addition is the weapons in each car. In some races, players can use an electromagnetic pulse, spike strips, road blocks and other weapons in order to get ahead of opponents, or to apprehend racers if the player is using the police. This seems a bit unrealistic for the series and feels like the game took a page from the James Bond movies. Also, some races rely on a time limit, but in those cases, it seems the event calls for players to not only take every shortcut available on the track, but also to not collide into anything at all. It seems to be near impossible and something that should be fixed.

Overall, the game is fun to play, the graphics look great and those who have always wished to play as the police can finally do so. It is a great change of pace for racing fans and the selection of cars is impressive. The latest iteration in the franchise doesn’t disappoint, and despite its flaws, “Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit” is an enjoyable game.
