'I Love You Phillip Morris' — 3 out of 5 stars

After seemingly endless delays, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s “I Love You Phillip Morris” has finally been released in the United States. The movie has been subject to much controversy because of its themes surrounding homosexuality. It experienced many suggested edits for the United States’ release. “Phillip Morris” is at times quite amusing, but also a somber saga of the heart. Ewan McGregor gives a striking performance as Phillip Morris, flanking Jim Carrey’s epic portrayal of real life con artist Steven Jay Russell.

Russell leads a mundane middle class existence as a police deputy, a husband and a father. After a car accident, he realizes he is gay and begins to scam and cheat his way to happiness. After being sent to prison for the first time, he meets Phillip Morris and they become very close. After this, Russell only acts in the interest of continuing his tenuous relationship with Morris.

Although at times the movie seems to be a psychotic combo of “Catch Me If You Can” and “Man On The Moon,” it is fairly engaging. “Phillip Morris” is a comedy, a sad tale and a tender love story. Carrey is surprising with his versatility. At heart I continue to be a giant lover of “Dumb and Dumber,” but I would still highly suggest seeing this film.
