Joanna Newsom changes it up with Have One On Me
If you've listened to Joanna Newsom before, be prepared to encounter a different dynamic of the artist on her latest album, Have One On Me. Listeners still hear her familiar (yet sometimes surprising) quirky vocal inflections, but this time there's a sense Newsom grew in the depth of her voice, among other areas. Right away in the opening track, "Easy," the listener can hear a different tone from Newsom. Her usual attitude is converted into a more gracious and diverse flavor. Although the three-disc album is lyrically very different from YS and Milk-Eyed Mender, Newsom continues to showcase her talent instrumentally. Horns, strings, percussion and harp vary the album stylistically and keep the listener's ear busy yet at ease. The variety within the record allows for the listener to experience more versatility as well. There is not one set mood throughout but an almost story-like progression makes the listener want to put it on repeat. Newsom has some tracks that are solely instrumental and others packed with intense lyrics. That type of diversity within a record remains interesting for more than one listen. When you have the chance to listen through the album once in its entirety, you will want to do it again and again.
