Drake's "Over" a good indicator of music to come
The territory Drake has entered is unheralded. The 23-year-old Canadian born rapper has won Grammies, rapped with the greatest artists in the industry and holds a laundry list of endorsements- all without releasing an official studio album. His first single off his much-anticipated album, Thank Me Later came out on Mar. 4.
The song, “Over”, begins with an unenthused, monotone Drake half-singing, half-rapping. It’s catchy and confident, something that marks Drake as an MC. Unlike the poppy “Best I Ever Had”, “Over” has a lot of swagger that rap fans can hold onto. In the song, he takes full advantage of the metaphor based rap style coined by his mentor Lil’ Wayne, “You too fine to be laying down in bed alone, I can teach you how to speak my language, Rosetta Stone.”
At the end of his second verse Drake raps “they treat me like a legend/am I really this cool?” Though the question is rhetorical, Drake has answer- an emphatic yes on his hook, “What am I doing? /oh yea that’s right, I’m doing me.” While Drake’s coolness will never be questioned, the success of his album will be. Drake has reached an incredibly high level without doing much, and if people are expecting an epic rap album along the lines of 2001 or the Tha Carter III, they’ll be disappointed.
What the album will have is a lot of catchy hooks, laugh out loud punch lines, and star studded appearances including Wayne, The-Dream, and Jay-Z. I think “Over” is a good indication of what’s to come for Drake, and your feelings of this song will probably determine your opinions of his album.
