"She's Out of My League" a lovable, yet predictable, romantic comedy
"She’s Out of My League" may have been given way too much commercial airtime, including late night promotions on Adult Swim, but outside of its predictable plot, it succeeded in giving the audience a lot of honest laughs. Though the cast was fairly scattered, everyone from "That 70’s Show’s" Kitty to that hottie who first stole our (and Beverly Mitchell’s) hearts on "7th Heaven," the movie proved that you don’t need an all-star cast to deliver a good, ol' fashioned romantic comedy. (We learned this in reverse watching "Valentine’s Day.")
Jay Baruchel plays the main character, Kirk, who follows in the footsteps of fellow geeky, yet somewhat sexy, comedian Michael Cera in his attempt to woo Molly, played by Alice Eve. He will also be the star of Disney’s newest attempt at family-friendly magic, "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice." Baruchel wasn’t the smoothest guy to cast as British bombshell and future "Sex and the City 2" cast member Alice Eve’s love interest, but he was definitely the nicest. Along the way, he runs into many quirky, love-driven unfortunate events, mostly inspired by his goofy and misguided group of friends.
The rest of cast delivered slapstick humor, with jabs at NASCAR, airport security and every man’s single-most dreaded fear, meeting the parents. My first impression of the movie, developed from the many commercials replaying the same idea ad nauseam, was wrong. There were a lot of moments that completely caught me off guard and were purely funny and sweet. The movie also had a good message about self-image and the many (sometimes ridiculous) things we go through to attract and impress a love interest or simply feel comfortable in our own skin. Some moments screamed "Superbad" and others almost dauntlessly mimicked "The Hangover." All of it was funny and reminded the audience of their first awkward encounters with love.
