The film “Going the Distance” is a romantic comedy about the complications of a long distance relationship. Erin (Drew Barrymore) is a summer intern at a New York publication when she randomly meets Garrett (Justin Long) at a bar one evening. Their instant chemistry and witty conversation launch these two into a summer fling, which neither thought would last after Erin goes home to San Francisco at the end of the summer. Yet, after six weeks of running around New York City together, this casual affair turns into a serious relationship.

Despite disapproving comments from Erin’s sister, Corinne (Christina Applegate), and Garrett’s friends, Box (Jason Sudeikis) and Dan (Charlie Day), both decide to try the long distance thing across the country. With dry humor and witty charm, this film gives a realistic insight into the stages of a relationship and the stereotypes of love.

Between the constant texting, late night phone calls and the expensive airfare, the audience cannot help but laugh at the things we do for love. Although the plot is fairly predictable, the natural chemistry between Barrymore and Long makes it easier for the audience to empathize with their struggle to make a relationship work across a continent. With ease, both characters show that one of the keys to a great relationship is being one another’s best friend. “Going the Distance” is a must-see movie for this fall.
