Lady GaGa’s new single “Born This Way” has been so hyped it couldn’t possibly live up to all the talk. No, it didn’t cure AIDS, it didn’t create peace between Israel and Palestine and it didn’t end global warming.
Alas, it’s still a great single and will surely be another no. 1 record for GaGa. Comparisons have been made between numerous other songs — most notably Madonna’s “Express Yourself." While there are similarities, “Born This Way” stands on its own two feet.
With a pulsing club beat and powerhouse vocals, the song is an anthem for anyone who has ever been labeled different, as heard in the bridge, “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen."
The song is almost a hodgepodge of everything that makes GaGa special: lyrics in Italian, a spoken word outro and an order to “Put your paws up." This cheapens the originality of the song but it’s still a worthy effort.
While “Born This Way” isn’t the greatest song GaGa has ever recorded, I am still confident that the album, to be released May 23, will be something special.
