Paul/Hoffman win MSA election

Missouri Students Association President-elect Jordan Paul stands with campaign manager Domingo Pacheco after Board of Elections Commissioners Chairman Justin Mohn announced the results of the election Wednesday at Jesse Hall. Paul and running mate Colleen Hoffman won 42 percent of the vote, defeating the slate of Phyllis Williams and Jonathan Snipes by 21 votes.

In a tight battle for MSA president and vice president, Jordan Paul and Colleen Hoffman squeaked out a victory over Phyllis Williams and Jonathan Snipes. There were 4,822 total voters.

Here are the final results for the Missouri Students Association presidential election:

  • Jordan Paul and Colleen Hoffman won with 42 percent of the vote (2,007 total votes).
  • Phyllis Williams and Jonathan Snipes received 41 percent of the vote (1,986).
  • Joe Fessehaye and Lindsey Abell received 17 percent of the vote (829).

Students overwhelmingly voted for a referendum that requires three-fifths of student voters to add or increase a student fee. This changes from a simple majority. On that issue 4,410 people voted — 76 percent voted for the referendum, a total of 3,344.

Correction: The original version of this story gave an incorrect number for those voting yes on the referendum. The Maneater regrets the error.

Throughout their entire campaign, I never once heard Paul/Hoffmann address the fact that MSA is looking at upwards of $100,000 worth of carryover money this year (following a trend of steadily increasing rollover since 2006). That's $100,000 of OUR money that won't be spent while we are students at MU. Get ready for another year of Jim Kelley style apathy to the real issues. I sincerely hope that Paul/Hoffmann look into the real issues like the massive amount of rollover money that MSA sits on each year while deserving auxiliaries have to fight tooth and nail for reasonable/necessary funding. Forget trayless dining; I want to see the money that I am paying into the system used while I am still at MU. Either approve more funding for auxiliary expenditures or reduce the student activities fee. These two are terrible people and do not deserve to serve as our President and Vice President in MSA. They are unapproachable and lack necessary qualifications and experience to lead this campus effectively. I demand a re-count before we let these two morons ruin our campus. It should be embarrasing for Jordan Paul to be congratulated for spending nearly $5000 on his campaign and to only win by 21 votes compared to another slate who had less than 10 percent of the money they had. That speaks volumes. People wake up, your vote should not have to bought, they have fooled our campus into thinking they are legit by over the top marketing flyers and banners.

First I would like to say congrats to Jordan and Colleen. I'm sure you guys put in a ton of work and I look forward to seeing what you guys can accomplish over the next year. Secondly, for those who are complaining, it's time to get over it. So what if they spent $5000 on their compaign? If they had the money to do it then why shouldn't they? Give them a chance to show what they can do and then complain, not before they've even taken office.

While I have no problems with Colleen's qualifications, I have great concern about the skill level of Jordan Paul. In every interview, every org visit, and every debate I watched, Paul was unable to prove his worthiness as a leader who will be in charge of hundreds of diverse student organizations. His background knowledge of diversity and diversity-based groups on campus is deplorable, and I am afraid to discover the true depth of his ignorance during the course of the next year.

Diversity groups? Why have them? The most diverse group is the student body, when you start having Diversity groups( clicks) then the melting pot disappears. To me you should work on inclusion and have everyone bring there differences to the plate. If you have like minded people come together in a click(d-group) then what have you accomplished? Drop the walls and groups and share with everyone and bring everyone together not just platforms that like minded people have gotten together in there clicks and decided on. Our goal is this.... Our goal is that... isn't there common causes everyone wants and should get. Why is always about us us us and not everyone!!!
