MSA Senate Operations Committee roundup

Following a breakdown of communication over KCOU and the Craft Studio, MSA President Jordan Paul proposed legislation to create a second chief of staff position. The new position would focus on communication with MSA auxiliaries.

As the current chief of staff only gets paid for six hours of work per week and the duties typically require about ten hours per week, Paul said he feels a second position is necessary.

MSA also reviewed the bylaws for the upcoming Senate election. Candidates are no longer required to submit a petition to be on the ballot, they simply have to fill out an application of intent to run 29 days prior to the election.

The primary changes to the handbook include the addition of candidate information sessions. Candidates are no longer allowed to use food and novelty items as promotional materials. If a third party posts material against another candidate, the BEC has the right to request a candidate to take it down within eight hours.

MSA Senator Dan Kelley was approved as a member of the BEC. Senator Phyllis Williams’ nomination was tabled until next week.

The committee also deliberated the wording of an upcoming student fee referendum concerning a student fee for sustainability. If the referendum passes, a $1 fee will be created to fund sustainability efforts. This will result in a total student fee decrease of $0.34. If the referendum fails, the student fee will decrease by $1.34.
