MSA passed legislation in support of a Freedom Week
The Missouri Students Association passed legislation Wednesday which established a Freedom Week.
The bill was written by Senator Brett Dinkins over the summer in order to express support for the University to recognize Freedom Week and World Freedom Day on the official university calendar.
The legislation passed though the The Missouri Student Veterans’ Association’s concerns. Dinkins’ legislation scheduled the week to fall within the week of Nov. 9 in order to encompass World Freedom Day and Veterans Day. The MSVA expressed concern the unofficial Veterans’ Week already acknowledged by the organization would be overshadowed by Freedom Week. Dinkins disagreed.
“The thing about the MSVA's concerns, is that there really were no legitimate concerns,” Dinkins said. “I think MSVA and Kathy Murray were both very confused about what the resolution actually was doing."
Dinkins said some of the criticisms of his proposal were untrue.
"It’s understandable considering (MSVA and Kathy Murray's) limited knowledge about MSA and trying to understand how to read what the resolution was going to do," Dinkins said. "However, some of their complaints, such as saying this was my 'attempt to push a political agenda,' were just completely ridiculous. I am glad the student body was able to see through the smoke screen of claims that were made.”
World Freedom Day was established in 2001 by President George W. Bush to be celebrated on Nov. 9 in order to recognize the fall of the Berlin Wall.
