JSO elects new president, outreach chairman

The Jewish Student Organization elected Daniel Brick as the new president and Sherman Fabes as the new outreach chair Friday.

JSO usually holds elections at the beginning of the academic year. Since the former JSO President Lauren Fredman is graduating this December, JSO held elections again this year to elect a new president, JSO Executive Director Kerry Hollander said.

JSO met at 5 p.m. Friday for elections. Brick said presidential nominees gave short speeches before students voted. Brick’s election left his former position of outreach chairman empty. Sherman Fabes ran unopposed for outreach chairmanship, Brick said.

Brick said he plans to increase JSO activity attendance by publicizing events well and making activities more attractive to college students.

“This semester we’ve been very good about planning our events way ahead of time, and it’s done great for active participation, so that’s something we want to stick to,” Brick said.

Hollander, who has worked with JSO since 1984, said the students lead the organization and make the decisions themselves, and she supports them and provides any requested guidance. A successful JSO board member puts the group’s needs first and is responsible, creative and inclusive, Hollander said.

“I have been privileged to work with many different persons who have a variety of skills and strengths,” Hollander said.

Fabes said he plans to reach out to new students by making them feel welcome.

“It’s easy to bring the same people back over and over,” Fabes said. “But we want to bring in even more new faces, because all they can do is make Hillel stronger.”

Fabes said his strategy for student outreach requires making face-to-face connections.

“You’ve got to do Facebook, e-mail,” Fabes said. “But more so, it’s personal connections. It’s easy to delete a Facebook message. It’s not easy to delete a person.”
