The MU News Bureau released a statement Wednesday morning confirming the discovery of a case of swine flu in an MU student. The student, whose name is not being disclosed due to privacy laws, was diagnosed with swine flu, or the H1N1 flu strain, in China and had left campus on May 7, the release stated.

The release stated MU officials and public health professionals are working to determine what actions, if any, should be taken.

"We continue to recommend that individuals follow the health guidelines that have been publicized earlier to avoid the spread of respiratory illness," Student Health Center Director Susan Even said in the news release.

Those recommendations, which were sent out to students in a mass e-mail May 1, include washing hands, avoiding crowds and seeking medical attention only if experiencing the symptoms of swine flu.

"At this time, as we've observed the H1N1 influenza in this country, the illness does not appear to be any more serious than the seasonal flu," Even said in the news release.
