John Miller, former Florida International University treasurer, was appointed UM system treasurer Monday.

A news release from the university said Miller will provide operating leadership and strategic direction for the university’s cash management, investment portfolios including management of the university’s retirement and endowment funds, debt and all banking relationships across all four campuses, the health system and operating units as treasurer.

“John brings a wonderful breadth of knowledge and expertise to this critical position for the university,” said Nikki Krawitz, UM system vice president of finance and administration, in the news release. “His extensive background in health care and education, coupled with his outstanding reputation and work ethic, will serve the university well.”

Miller earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce and is a certified treasury professional from the Association of Financial Professionals, the news release said. He also served as vice president and treasurer for Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, Tex. Miller was unavailable for comment.

The UM system treasurer position has been vacant since former treasurer Shirley DeJarnette left the university Dec. 31, 2008. UM system spokeswoman Jennifer Hollingshead said DeJarnette joined the university in 1990 as assistant vice president of finance and that her title was changed to treasurer in 1999.
