Coming Out Week is coming soon

The first week of October is Coming Out Week, a nationally recognized week meant to celebrate, and educate about, the LGBT community. The celebration will feature an event every day excluding Thursday due to MU football. Events include guest speaker and former NFL player Esera Tuaolo on Wednesday night as well as another social at the Heidelberg on Friday.

This week, Triangle Coalition held an ice cream social in Memorial Union’s Center for Social Justice.

The social was informal and relaxed, as students lounged on couches, enjoyed ice cream and discussed whatever was on their minds.

"We had a pretty good turnout," TriCo President Erin Horth said. “We’d consider doing this again next semester, in the spring.”

Many TriCo members actively work in Columbia’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or questioning community, but they look to include everyone, Horth said.

“There are various levels of understanding on campus,” Horth said. “We aim to bring in people from all walks of life."

TriCo member Amanda Brenner said the group is also there for people who need a place to come to.

“I think it’s a good group for socialization, support if you’re in trouble and to make the campus feel more welcoming,” Brenner said. “We want to bring the rest of the community to an understanding.”
