NPHC hosting Olympic Week
The National Pan-Hellenic Council is hosting its NPHC Olympic Week from Sunday to Saturday.
Originally scheduled for earlier in September, the week was moved due to room reservation problems with Memorial Union, NPHC President Derrick Christian said.
Christian said it was hard to pick which event he is most looking forward to as the whole week is amazing and excellently themed. He said the week is themed with a fusion of the essence of Greekdom and the spirit of healthy competition.
The week’s festivities began Sunday with the “Battle of the Greeks,” a Top Chef styled competition at the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center.
“Sex Mythology,” a safe sex education forum, will take place on Monday in Bengal Lair.
Tuesday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., anyone wanting to learn more about NPHC can stop by Chambers Auditorium in the new student center for the “Meeting at Mount Olympus,” for presentations, a student panel and other valuable resources.
“I’m excited for the informational meeting,” Christian said. “It offers a way to tell the community what we’re about.”
Wednesday is “Hump Day.” From noon to 2 p.m. at the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center, there will be a celebration including music and food.
Later that same day, “Toga 101” will take place at Memorial Union S016. Tips and help with design options will be offered for those wanting to create a toga for Friday’s NPHC Olympic “Toga Party.”
The NPHC Olympic Games Night will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday on the second floor of Memorial Union South.
Friday is the first NPHC Toga Party at MU. The party will begin at 9 p.m. in the Mark Twain Ballroom of Memorial Union and will last until 1 a.m. on Saturday.
From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday is the Community Service of Epic Proportions. NPHC will be attempting to break a Columbia record at the Central Missouri Food Bank. Sixty-two people packaged more than 2,800 pounds of food on Feb. 5, 2008. NPHC aims to break that record and asks people to join them in this goal.
Christian said NPHC has put a lot of hard work and planning into this week.
