Ice skating open at Stephens Lake Park

If cold temperatures hold, students will be able to ice skate at Stephens Lake Park when winter break ends. According to a city news release, the ice at the park measures at least four inches thick, which is the minimum requirement needed for the city to allow ice-skating at the park.

In addition to ice-skating, ice fishing is also available at Cosmo-Bethel Lake.

The level of ice is checked, according to the news release, by drilling a series of holes beginning at the shoreline and moving toward the center. Although the ice is deemed safe, the news release suggests taking safety precautions such as having a rope available in case of an emergency and always going with someone else.

To check the daily ice conditions and see if skating is allowed, look under the announcements section of the city [Parks and Recreation’s Web site.] (http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/ParksandRec/)
