University Hospital commended for improved stroke care practices
Get With the Guidelines awarded University Hospital with the Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award Tuesday.
“We are very proud to have received this award,” said Pradeep Sahota, M.D., chair of the Department of Neurology at University of Missouri Health Care in a news release. “It recognizes our commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for our stroke patients.”
When treating its stroke patients, the hospital pulls experts from several different departments, ranging from neurology to cardiology. This rapid evaluation and treatment, hospital staffers said, cannot only save someone’s life, but also preserve its quality.
“Get With the Guidelines is really a tool that helps us standardize science-based treatment guidelines to nationally accepted best practices,” said Niranjan Singh, M.D., neurologist and co-director of University Hospital’s stroke program in a news release. “These are the most up-to-date guidelines that address acute stroke management, primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, secondary prevention of strokes and the establishment of primary stroke centers.”
These guidelines have been incorporated by the University Hospital staff and now dominate a system for rapidly diagnosing and treating stroke.
Developed by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, Get With the Guidelines is a hospital-based quality improvement program.
