Alpha Phi Omega holds final spring recruitment meeting

Freshmen Bridget Kelly, Conor Sutton, Jae Katherine Stephens and Lara Piszar learn about joining Alpha Phi Omega at an informational meeting for prospective members Tuesday in Strickland Hall. Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity, has experienced a boost in pledges the last two semesters and is trying to expand its reach in the community.

Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity, held its second and final recruitment meeting for the spring semester Tuesday.

“APO is a co-ed national service fraternity that has three main objectives: leadership, friendship and service,” pledge trainer Erik DeLaney said. “The goal of APO on Mizzou's campus is to provide service to both the campus and to the community of Columbia.”

DeLaney said their recruitment goals for this semester are to get a group of dedicated pledges who want to help Alpha Phi Omega succeed and do service for the community and the campus.

Alpha Phi Omega sponsors philanthropy projects with Rainbow House Columbia, Ronald McDonald House, Central Missouri Food Bank and others. During the eight-week initiation process that begins in March, members can begin finding service programs they are interested in before they become active members.

“I plan on really helping the pledge class get a early head start on helping others and providing service and really helping to excel APO at Mizzou,” DeLaney said. “I am hoping to expand our reach in the community by continuing to get APO's name out in the community by performing service throughout Columbia.”

Since last spring, they have received over 50 pledges for membership per semester. Members are required to do a minimum 20 hours of community service each semester, at least 10 of which must be at Alpha Phi Omega sponsored events.

“I hope that I am able to train pledges to love and respect APO as much as I have come to in the past three years,” DeLaney said.
