Student Webmail experiences delays

The MU student Webmail system experienced technical difficulties Monday. According to the Division of Information Technology Web site, the Outlook Live Webmail system became unavailable to students around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

At approximately 5 p.m. this evening the Outlook Live Webmail server was back online and functioning properly, but it went offline again around 6 p.m.

The error occurred on the Microsoft Outlook Live server, monitored by Microsoft, independent of DoIT.

This problem comes after similar errors occurred earlier this semester, including two incidents that delayed e-mail delivery in early February. Both incidents took place on the Microsoft server, independent of MU’s own e-mail server.

DoIT Director Terry Robb said Microsoft was not able to provide clear reasons for February’s slowdowns and today’s crash. Robb and colleagues will meet to discuss the issues tomorrow morning.

“We will be talking about what we need to prevent these things from happening again,” Robb said.

Last fall, DoIT implemented a mandatory switch for students and faculty from Microsoft Office Outlook to the current system, Outlook Live. The new system has many upgrades in storage and other features from the previous system, but has also faced difficulties with delays in its first year.
