Texas officials hold news conference
The University of Texas reaffirmed its commitment to the Big 12 on Tuesday morning, during a press conference including University of Texas President William Powers, Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds and Women’s Athletics Director Chris Plonsky.
“We’ve been served well by the Big 12 since its inception,” Powers said. "It’s always been our top priority to keep the Big 12 together.”
Powers said he was not in a position to comment on Texas’ discussions with the Pac-10, or any offer made.
“It is a great league,” Powers said of the Pac-10. “They were extremely professional in all of our discussions.”
In the end, Powers said Texas had to consider the economics of the situation, their student athletes, long standing rivalries and a very successful history with the Big 12.
“We did become concerned when there was talk of other schools leaving to the Big 10,” Powers said. “Instability is not good for any conference”
Powers said today the Big 12 is in a far better position then they were three months ago.
“This league, despite the choices of two of our members, is not bereft of strength,” Plonksy said.
