UPDATE: Three children injured in three-car collision

The City of Columbia has issued a press release with official details of a three-car collision that blocked traffic on College Avenue near Locust Street around 6:20 p.m. tonight.

According to the release the Columbia Fire Department was called to the accident at 6:22 p.m., with reports that a passenger was trapped in one of the vehicles. The release said a red Ford Focus, a green Honda Civic, and a red Honda Prelude were in the intersection with heavy damage.

The release said that three children, ages 6, 8 and six months were transported to University Hospital, two with life-threatening injuries. There were no other reported injuries. (Note: an earlier blog post reported that it appeared one child, one infant and one adult were transported, but this release confirms that was two children and an infant).

The release did not specify which children sustained the life-threatening injuries or which cars each child was riding in.

Crews checked the vehicles for any other possible hazards and controlled fluids leaking from one vehicle, the release said. College Avenue was closed from Broadway to University Avenue until about 7:20 p.m.
