Flags on Carnahan Quad commemorate Sept. 11
In honor of Sept. 11, the College Republicans set up 2,977 flags in South Carnahan Quadrangle to represent every American killed in the attacks.
College Republicans Co-Chair Brett Dinkens said this is the second consecutive year their organization has set up the flag display. Before that, the group had stopped creating the display after having done it for a number of years in the past.
“We probably had about 25 people there,” Dinkens said. “It was good that it was a lot of new people that had heard about it and that wanted to get involved.”
Dinkens said this year’s set-up was also more efficient and better attended than the previous year’s, even with the rain. The students started setting up on Sept. 10 at 11:59 p.m. and finished by 12:50 a.m.
The event was organized by the College Republicans, but Dinkens said the attendees were not all Republicans.
“There was one College Democrat there,” Dinkens said. “Overall, it was the Republicans that set it up.”
To commemorate Sept. 11, the College Democrats also held a bake sale in Speaker’s Circle to raise money for American troops.
