Homecoming blood drive collects record 5,264 units
The American Red Cross announced Thursday that MU, which hosts the largest student-run blood drive in the nation, exceeded its donation goal for the 2011 Homecoming Blood Drive, according to the Mizzou Homecoming Facebook page.
MU wanted to collect at least 5,000 units in celebration of the centennial Homecoming celebration. The American Red Cross received 5,264 units from this year’s blood drive. Each unit of blood can save up to three lives.
4,842 units were collected Oct. 3 through Oct. 6. The American Red Cross received additional units from the Homecoming Community Express Blood Drive and satellite regions to contribute to MU’s donation.
Last year, MU’s 25th annual Homecoming Blood Drive resulted in the collection of 4,217 units, exceeding its goal of 4,000 units collected.
Homecoming Director Brandon Thiel said the Homecoming Steering Committee was pleased with the results of this year's blood drive.
"We're very excited to reach the 5,000 unit goal we set back in the spring, and we're very proud of our students and alumni who contributed to this day's success," he said.
