Senior honored for inaugural National Student Day

In celebration of National Student Day, a committee selected senior Kiki Schmitz to receive a $500 textbook scholarship Thursday at the MU Bookstore.

"It's wonderful that the college store industry is recognizing students who volunteer their talents and time to benefit the university and the greater community," University Bookstore Director Sherry Pollard said in a press release. "Given the rising cost of education, our bookstore is excited to offer a $500 textbook scholarship to a deserving student. We hope this becomes an annual event."

Sponsored by the National Association of College Stores and numerous campus bookstores, the event recognizes students who excel in terms of volunteerism and social responsibility. Schmitz's nominator, Megan Stroup, said the senior demonstrates both of these qualities.

"As a senior at MU, Kiki has shown selfless service and exemplary leadership on campus and in the community throughout her four years in Columbia," Stroup wrote.
