UM System won't face fine for raised tuition

The Missouri Department of Higher Education approved on Monday a request the UM System had made to waive penalty fees for raising tuition.

Because the system decided to raise tuition and fees at a rate of 5.8 percent for the 2011-12 academic year, higher than the consumer price increase, it was required to submit the waiver to the state or face a fine. The system was the first institution in the state to submit this request.

“Based on the university’s responses to the criteria established to evaluate penalty waiver requests, I have concluded that the tuition rate increase adopted by the University of Missouri System is sufficiently warranted,” MDHE Commissioner David Russell said in a news release.
