Golf tournament to benefit breast cancer held in Columbia resident’s memory
Golfers from across the state gathered Monday at the Columbia Country Club for the 11th annual Deon Starman Memorial Golf Tournament.
The tournament is held in memory of Deon Starman, a local golf aficionado and breast cancer awareness activist. She died in December 2004 of a sudden brain aneurysm.
“We are grateful for the decade of support from the Starmans,” said Kristi Gafford, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center executive director, in a news release. “Like the Starmans, all of us at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center share the same passion for one day finding a cure for breast cancer.”
Deon’s husband of 16 years Dave Starman organizes the tournament to honor two of his wife’s biggest passions — golf and breast cancer awareness. Last year, the tournament raised $14,000 for breast cancer research at the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. During the past decade, it has raised more than $89,000.
