Inactive student organizations run risk of going 'defunct'
A few weeks ago the Organization Resource Group posted a list of about 30 organizations on its website that are at risk of going defunct.
ORG Vice Chairwoman of Administration Ashley Todd said the main purpose of doing this was to notify organizations of their current standing with ORG and to update the Student Organization Database by separating inactive organizations from organizations that might not have updated their information.
Organizations at risk of becoming defunct have had a “hold” for at least a year.
“A registration hold means you have not properly updated the officer information of your organization,” ORG’s website states. “A training hold means your president or primary contact has not attended administrative training. An officer of record of an organization must attend one admin training a year. If an organization wants to get funding from ORG, then the treasurer must attend finance training.”
Todd said it is simple for an organization to remove any holds.
“We require that organizations do two things in order to have an active status with the ORG,” she said. “They must go into the ORG database and update the officer information for their group every academic year or after any election or change of officers the group experiences.”
If a group fails to get rid of any holds by the end of a year it will be added to the pending defunct list.
“Once a group is on our pending defunct list, we then begin contacting the officers of the group and posting our list on our website,” Todd said. “We are looking for people to get in contact with us and let us know if the group is still active or if it has gone under. We gradually hear back from groups and our final defunct list is much smaller than our original pending defunct list.”
The pending defunct list has since been taken down from the ORG website. If a student cannot find a certain organization in the Student Organization Database, it is most likely the organization has gone defunct.
