MU to switch to Southeastern Conference

Beginning July 1, 2012, MU will officially join the Southeastern Conference, officials announced Sunday.

After months of speculation, the move was announced Sunday on the SEC's website.

“The Southeastern Conference is a highly successful, stable, premier athletic conference that offers exciting opportunities for the University of Missouri," Chancellor Brady Deaton said in a news release. “In joining the SEC, MU partners with universities distinguished for their academic programs and their emphasis on student success. The SEC will provide our student-athletes with top flight competition and unparalleled visibility. We came to this decision after careful consideration of the long term best interests of our university. We believe the Southeastern Conference is an outstanding home for the Mizzou Tigers, and we take great pride in our association with this distinguished league.”

Bernie Machen, SEC Presidents and Chancellors President and University of Florida President, said the SEC is excited to have MU join.

“The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference are pleased to welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC,” he said in the release. “The University of Missouri is a prestigious academic institution with a strong athletic tradition and a culture similar to our current institutions.”

MU will be the fourth largest institution in the SEC and the fourth to hold membership in the Association of American Universities.

“I am pleased to officially welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC family on behalf of our presidents, chancellors, athletics directors, students and fans,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. “Missouri is an outstanding academic institution with a strong athletic program. We look forward to having the Tigers compete in our league starting in 2012.”

Student Court finds Loeffler-Damico slate committed minor infraction

The Student Court found the Missouri Students Association presidential slate Greg Loeffler and Lauren Damico guilty of a minor infraction.

The Loeffler-Damico slate was issued a minor infraction for posting campaign materials in the Arts and Sciences building bulletin board strips above chalk boards in classrooms.

The Board of Elections Commissioners originally issued the slate with a major infraction for that reason.

According to the Student Court ruling, the slate "must conform to the restrictions of the bulding administrators and those buildings in which these restrictions have been violated must be corrected within 24 hours of this ruling."

Student Center welcomes 1,000,000th visitor

As most students waltzed in and out of the doors of the MU Student Center on Wednesday, freshman Paula Steinmeyer was treated a bit differently.

She was met with air horns and confetti, as she was the center's 1,000,000th visitor. Averaging 17,000 visitors a day, the center hit its one million mark Wednesday.

"We are thrilled that so many students, faculty and staff visit the MU Student Center each and every day," Missouri Student Unions associate director Heath Immel said. "This building is a landmark in the heart of Mizzou and the hub of student activities and involvement. Reaching one million visitors so soon in the semester is a great accomplishment and we wanted to recognize the moment with a fun celebration."

Steinmeyer was welcomed with a sash, $50 gift cards to the University Bookstore, Campus Dining Services and a $50 US Bank Visa Check card. She also received a Beetle Bailey Mizzou shirt.

Gwynn Hall renovations in beginning stages

Renovations on Gwynn Hall will soon be underway, though a definitive plan for what will be added has yet to be established.

Renovations are projected to cost less than repairs would have cost, as Gwynn Hall is in the most disrepair of all campus buildings, Dean of Human Environmental Sciences Stephen Jorgensen said.

“The architect was here this week working with engineers to do the site study,” Jorgensen said. “They are just now getting the dimensions of the work that they will have to do.”

The renovations were approved at the Board of Curators meeting last Thursday afternoon. The project, estimated to cost around $11 million, will be similar to the recent renovations of Tate and Switzler Halls.

“We had to document that we had the funding in place (for the meeting),” Jorgensen said. “And we have that done.”

With the approval to gut and renovate Gwynn Hall, discussions on what will be added to the hall will soon be underway.

“We are getting everything that we could want (with the renovations),” Jorgensen said. “We are putting in about $920,000 of our own resources, and the rest is from the university.”
