Columbia fire station awarded for ecofriendliness
The U.S. Green Building Council recognized a Columbia fire station as environmentally friendly this week because it because the station uses special building materials and designs to reduce its energy use and carbon output, according to a press release on the city's website.
Fire Station #7, located in southwest Columbia, earned a LEED certification with a "Silver" rating from the Council. The non-profit group awards LEED certifications based on a building carbon emissions, energy efficiency and enivronmental sensitivity, according to its website. According to the city, the station was built in 2009 with the goal of meeting the LEED standard.
