Salmonella outbreak from Illinois affects Missouri

An outbreak of Salmonella has been traced back to Tiny Greens Organic Farm, located in Urbana, Ill., and has caused several illnesses in both Illinois and Missouri.

According to a press release from Tiny Greens, the products were delivered to a myriad of distributors in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. Tiny Greens Administrative Assistant Lilla Bagby said they cannot provide a list of all the distributors.

“We are not advising our distributors to get sprouts from anywhere else; they are returning the products included in the recall for credit,” Bagby said.

A Dec. 27 news release from the FDA said initial information from the investigation of the salmonella outbreak traced back to Tiny Greens’ Alfalfa Sprouts served at Jimmy John’s restaurants.

Around half of the cases took place in Illinois and according to the FDA news release, Jimmy John’s restaurants in Illinois have currently stopped serving sprouts on their food.

According to a news release from the Center for Disease Control, “From November 1 through December 27, approximately 94 illnesses linked to infection with the outbreak strain of Salmonella were reported from 16 states and the District of Columbia.”

MU Dining Services has not returned requests for comment on whether or not this affects their distribution.
