Obama taps Deaton for administrative post
President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint Chancellor Brady Deaton as chairman for his Board for International Food and Agriculture Development on Friday.
The appointment, which is typically served alongside current positions the selected person holds, requires approval by Congress before being finalized, but MU News Bureau spokeswoman Mary Jo Banken said the process boils down to a formality.
"The first we saw of this was a press release from the White House yesterday," Banken said. "Congress will indeed vote on the appointment, but it's very unlikely this sort of thing isn't approved."
If the appointments are approved, Deaton will be added to administrative posts along with nine other people. The official announcement from MU will likely come Monday, Banken said.
Deaton, who has served as MU's chancellor since 2004, holds a B.S. in Agricultural Economics, an M.A. in Diplomacy and International Commerce from the University of Kentucky, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Wisconsin.
