Obama addresses nation on death of Osama bin Laden
President Barack Obama addressed the American people on the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden on Sunday night.
Obama said he was briefed in August that bin Laden might be located in a compound deep in Pakistan. Last week, he said he authorized operation of a military plan to get hold of bin Laden. A small team of soldiers launched the plan and took to a fire fight where bin Laden was killed, Obama said. No civilians were reportedly killed.
"The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date to defeat al-Qaida," Obama said in his address.
Obama said this was also a feat for the country of Pakistan, which has also been negatively affected by bin Laden's terrorist acts.
Obama also addressed Americans affected by the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, saying their losses have not been forgotten.
"As a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened," Obama said.
