Nixon proposes extra budget cut for UM System schools
Gov. Jay Nixon took higher education cuts back down to 7 percent early Friday afternoon, but UM System schools as well as Missouri Western State University will receive an 8.1 percent cut. Nixon said this is because these schools opted for higher tuition increases.
MU students are facing a 5.8 percent tuition increase for the coming year, and across the board, UM System schools are looking at an average of a 5.5 percent tuition increase. The UM System's Board of Curators approved the tuition increases this past January.
Nixon cited these cuts, among others, as necessary, so that money can be put towards disaster damage and to make up for a loss of revenue expected statewide.
Nixon also cut an extra $3 million in scholarships for Missouri students, the AP reported. That still leaves the programs with more than they received the previous year.
