Nixon orders flags half staff after firefighter’s death

On Tuesday, Gov. Jay Nixon ordered that U.S. and Missouri flags at state government buildings in Boone County be flown at half staff from sunrise to sunset Thursday to honor fallen Columbia firefighter Lt. Bruce Britt.

Britt, of the Columbia Fire Department, died Saturday when responding to a walkway collapse at University Village Apartments. He served at the fire department for 23 years.

Columbia City Manager Mike Matthes ordered flags at municipal buildings be flown at half staff for 30 days. The city also encourages businesses and residents to lower their flags.

Staffing at city buildings will be minimal on Thursday morning, as many city workers will attend the memorial service. The Community Development Department will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to support Leigh Britt, Britt’s wife, the city’s neighborhood services manager.

Britt’s memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at The Crossing church in Columbia. The processional will begin at 8:45 a.m at Memorial Funeral Home.
