Columbia City Council approved a $403 million budget for 2010 Monday night. Discussion revolved around the budget’s effect on employee benefits and social services funding. Employees’ paid sick-time, vacation and holidays will be affected. Social services funding was cut by 5 percent, from $903,743 to $858, 556. Check out the story here.

What’s Happening

Tomorrow, the 9th Annual Fire Factor & Room Burn, hosted by the Columbia Fire Department, will focus on teaching fire safety through fun, with rides, fire extinguisher training and use, as well as a firefighter obstacle course. A mock student room will be set ablaze to demonstrate the speed at which fire can burn. The event will be held at Speaker’s Circle at 11:50 a.m. Free food, t-shirts and the chance to win prizes will be available.

The 6th Annual Century Corps of Discovery Lecture will explore the printing revolution with MU Curators Professor of History A. Mark Smith. Smith will discuss the printing press’ effect and transformation on text and reading. The lecture will be held in Keller Auditorium in the Geology Building at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.
