CPD unsure about heightened security at local high school

Columbia Police Department's plans in response to the incident at Hickman High School on Aug. 22 are less defined than those of the school district.

Lt. Scott Young of CPD was unable to provide a definite cause for the fight between three Hickman High School students.  Young did, however, comment on whether additional security would be added around the area.

“[I am] not sure we are going to be doing anything,” Young said.

This comment is a contrast to a previous statement given to The Maneater by the assistant superintendent of the Columbia High School District, Lynn Barnett.

According to Barnett, there will be added security, not only around Hickman High, but also for the school’s first football game on Friday.   Barnett said that the game will have heightened police presence along with more administrators.

Both Young and Barnett commented on the increase in violence in the area around Hickman in the past months.

When asked for his take on the conflict, Young reiterated that he was “not sure of any added security.”

Young did not give any plans to combat the rising problem.
