Columbia man dies in car crash
A Columbia man died in a car crash Monday night. Police think alcohol may have contributed to the crash, which happened around 11 p.m., stated a news release from the Columbia Police Department.
The crash happened at the intersection of Missouri Route B and Waco Road.
The victim, Frederick Ward was driving eastbound on Waco Road approaching Route B while the other vehicle, which was driven by Centralia resident James Prior, Jr. was driving northbound on Route B approaching Waco Rd, stated the news release.
Prior was unable to stop and hit Ward’s vehicle on the passenger side door.
Ward and Prior had to be removed from their vehicles by Columbia Fire and EMS personnel and taken from the scene to the University Hospital, stated the news release.
Medical personnel pronounced Ward dead at the hospital.
Medical personnel said Prior's injuries were non-life threatening, stated the news release.
Police think alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash but are waiting for toxicology results to confirm this.
CPD Sgt. Shelley Jones said deadly crashes happen often and a portion involve alcohol or drugs.
This incident is under further investigation.

I knew Fred. He was a good man. If in fact, alcohol was a factor in this accident, I hope someone somewhere will think twice before drinking and driving. He will be missed.

I was a good friend of Fred and this accident was not caused by him drinkingg and drive in fact he had beer cans but none of them were open. I know his wife Nessy she is very strong about this situation and i do not respect te fact that he is accused of drinking and driving.

People should not make comments like these unless they know exactly what they are talking about! Frederick had a beautiful daughter, and what if she was to read this? It's sad enough that she is mourning the death of her father! Now this is printed in black and white for all to see and read. How tasteless!
