Police chief search narrowed
Columbia is another step closer to choosing a new police chief after City Manager Bill Watkins and his citizen advisory committee met today, stated a news release from the city.
The candidates for the position have been narrowed down from four candidates to two. The final two candidates are Police Chief Kenneth M. Burton and Police Major Christine L. Laughlin.
"All of them brought excellent qualities and experience to the table, but Chief Burton and Major Laughlin deserve further consideration," Watkins said in the news release.
Burton has worked in Arlington, Texas and other Texas communities, while Laughlin served the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department since the early ‘90s.
Watkins also said in the release that the two candidates, who met with the citizens committee and police officers two weeks ago, seemed to have a lot to offer to the community.
There is no set date of when the new chief will be announced.
"I would like to make a decision as soon as possible but will take all the time necessary to make absolutely sure we get a good fit," Watkins said in the news release.
