The search field for a new head of the Columbia Police Department has been narrowed to five candidates, all of whom are from different cities or states.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports the candidates are:

  • Police Chief Kenneth Burton of Haltom City, Texas
  • Police Chief Michael Clancey of Saluda, S.C.
  • Police Major Christine Laughlin of Kansas City
  • Police Chief Wayne McCoy of Blue Springs
  • Todd Miller, who recently served as the police chief of Terrell, Texas

The five candidates will be in Columbia on Monday, Jan.12 and Tuesday, Jan. 13 to meet with the public and local media. Click here for a schedule of their appearances in the community, and check out the Tribune's candidate summaries to learn more about the candidates and their home communities.

The search for a new police chief began in 2008 after former chief Randy Boehm announced he that he would retire in after 31 years of service with the department. He officially left the department July 1, 2008, and Interim Chief Tom Dresner filled the position in his absence. Boehm now serves as a manager of security for University Hospital.

Capt. Zim Schwartze of the CPD was the only internal candidate for the job, but did not make it through the selection process.
