CFD responds to commercial structure fire
Firefighters enter a building of a reported oven fire Friday evening at 607 Fourth St. According to the residents of the apartment, the damage was limited to the oven and the fire was quickly extinguished.
The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched at 8:40 p.m. Friday to 604 Fourth St. on report of a commercial structure fire.
Resident of Apt. 101 and MU senior Brittany Heenan said she was preheating the oven to make a birthday cake for her boyfriend when she started to smell smoke.
"I opened the window of the oven because smoke was kind of coming out of it," Heenan said. "I looked in the bottom of the gas stove and flames were coming out."
Heenan also said firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and damage was limited to the stove.
"One of the firefighters said the stove is done, so no birthday cake for my boyfriend," she said.
