CPD, MUPD urge use of Crime Stoppers
In the wake of recent incidents, Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jessie Haden is urging residents to utilize Crime Stoppers.
Columbia Missouri Crime Stoppers is non-profit tip line that allows civilians to aid in the prevention of crime by calling, texting or submitting tips via the internet.
Crime Stoppers has been serving the City of Columbia, Boone County and MU for nearly three decades.
In a CPD news release on Sunday, Haden encouraged citizens to use Crime Stoppers after a 911 call led to the prompt arrest of suspects in a robbery.
"Again, our officers' quick response along with the observant citizen who called 911 allowed us to apprehend these burglars and recover all the stolen property," Haden said in the release.
Haden also said crimes can go unnoticed and it is very important that citizens utilize Crime Stoppers to help apprehend criminals who illegally possess firearms or are otherwise putting our community at risk.
CPD is not the only local department to endorse Crime Stoppers. According to Capt. Brian Weimer, MU Police Department puts information on how to contact Crime Stoppers at the bottom of all its media releases, in addition to having it listed on the Web site.
"We have gathered information from Crime Stoppers in the past," Weimer said.
Crime Stoppers offers rewards for credible tips concerning unsolved felony crimes, crimes in progress or yet to occur and the whereabouts of wanted persons.
According a CPD news release, Crime Stoppers also accepts notices of illegal possession of a firearm or if someone has stolen a firearm.
Crime Stoppers was not the direct source for the information leading to the CPD arrest a week ago but it has played a part in solving crimes for MUPD.
"We were able to gather information on a murder a few years back and most recently we received information from Crime Stoppers that led to an arrest in an incident that occurred at the Hearnes Center," Weimer said.
