Sheriff's department investigating home invasion, shooting

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating a home invasion and shooting, a Sheriff’s Department news release stated.

According to an earlier news release, the incident happened on Oct. 29, at about 8 p.m. on Sanders Court in the Lake of the Woods area, east of Columbia.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the crime scene after a neighbor called 911 to report gunshots, said Major Tom Reddin of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim, a 26-year-old male, was shot in the leg and was treated for non-life threatening injuries, the news release stated.

According to the victim, the suspect forced the door to his residence open and demanded money while brandishing a handgun. When the victim did not provide the money, the suspect shot him, the news release stated.

An ambulance transported the man to the hospital where he was treated and later released.

“He didn’t even have to spend the night in the hospital,” Reddin said.

Reddin also said the incident appears to be drug related but the investigation is ongoing.

“There was evidence of drug activity at the scene and that’s about all I can say about that right now,” he said.

The victim said the assailant was wearing a Philadelphia 76ers basketball team jacket, blue jeans and high-top tennis shoes. The suspect was reportedly covering his face with a white handkerchief or bandana during the incident, the news release stated.

Detective Tom O’Sullivan of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department researched team logos for the 76ers to enhance the description of the suspect’s jacket.

A suspect has not yet been identified in the case but Reddin said the Sheriff’s Department is actively looking and welcomes any information the public can offer.

Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.
