CFD responds to kitchen fire

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 9:15 p.m. Friday at 21 E. Ash St., CFD Capt. Eric Hartmann said.

Smoke was seen coming out of the house along with visible flames from the back of the home when firefighters arrived. The fire was located in the kitchen and was the result of a grease fire.

The occupants of the home, David Humphries and Jonna Wiseman, had set oil in their dutch oven to cook tater tots, Hartmann said. They left the oil to heat up and soon after heard their dog barking in the kitchen. When they came into the kitchen they found it on fire and called 911. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes after arrival by CFD. There were no injuries.

The building sustained heavy damage to the kitchen and back of the home. It was declared uninhabitable and the American Red Cross responded to provide disaster assistance to the displaced occupants, Hartmann said.
