Dryer malfunction causes fire at Shakespeare's
Firefighters were called into the West Broadway location of Shakespeare’s Pizza on Thursday afternoon after a clothes dryer caught fire at the rear of the restaurant, according to a Columbia Fire Department news release. The dryer, located at the back of the restaurant, was used to clean towels used at the restaurant.
No injuries were reported, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.
Firefighters located the dryer in the rear mechanical room. The automatic sprinkler system had activated and prevented the fire from spreading beyond the dryer. The firefighters were able to put out the fire in the dryer before removing a large load of burnt towels from the inside, according to the release.
The restaurant, located at 3304 Broadway Business Park Court, suffered minor smoke and water damage in the kitchen area. Damage is estimated at $5,000.
The fire remains under investigation. The Columbia and Boone County Health Departments were also at the restaurant to ensure food-handling safety, something typical after a restaurant fire.
The release said the restaurant will remain closed until Thursday evening or Friday morning.
