Private vehicle and fire truck collide

A private vehicle crashed into a fire truck in the intersection of Providence Road and Walnut Street Thursday, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.

The driver of the private vehicle, William Powell, 63, collided with the fire truck as it was responding to an emergency, stated a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

The fire department had been dispatched to 310 Garth Ave. for a residential fire. The fire truck had its lights and sirens on when the car collided with the truck.

The fire truck, driven by Greg Hrdina, 31, also contained passengers Carol Leyow, 46, and Jeff Coffman, 38.

Everyone was wearing a seatbelt, and no one was injured in the crash, the police department news release stated.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians, as well as paramedics from University Health Care examined Powell on the scene, but he refused treatment or transport.

The private vehicle sustained major damage to the front end and had to be towed away from the scene.

The fire truck received moderate damage to the left rear side and a reserve fire truck was placed in front live service.

The police department is still investigating the accident.
