Unattended cooking believed to have caused apartment fire
An apartment at 319 N. Garth Ave. sustained substantial damage after a fire Friday afternoon, stated a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.
The fire is still under investigation, but unattended cooking appeared to be the cause, the news release stated.
Crews were dispatched to Apartment G around 4:20 p.m. Friday.
An assistant fire marshal who was in traffic near the scene arrived at the complex and saw smoke coming from the west end of the apartment, the news release stated.
The arriving crews were able to extinguish the flames, which were contained to the kitchen. Fire crews did not find anyone inside the apartment, the news release stated.
The resident of the apartment was found a few minutes after initial searches and had no injuries.
Smoke damaged both levels of the two-story apartment unit, and the kitchen sustained heavy fire damage, the news release stated. None of the other seven apartments were damaged.
Fire crews are still determining damage estimates.
